A
glass of wine or phone call will help beat winter blues
As the Met Office predicts the first spell of cold, snowy weather for the UK, 16% of us say nothing beats calling family or friends to warm the soul. Research released by Post Office HomePhone found a cheering phone call came second only to a glass of wine as the nation’s top "winter warmer". According to the study, men and women find comfort in different luxuries. 21.4% of men and only 6.5% of women rated watching a movie as their number one choice, while only 3.7% of men would opt for a ‘retail therapy’ shopping trip, compared to 12% of women. Phoning a friend was the top response from both the 16-24 and the 24-35 age groups. Shopping and reading a book came last on the list, each polling only 9% of the votes. Nick Jones, Head of Post Office HomePhone said: "It’s amazing how quickly freezing temperatures, long nights and winter rain can dampen our mood. Our survey shows that the simple, inexpensive things such as making a phone call or watching a movie can really help lift our spirits."
