It's wine in a can darling, so chuck us a stubbie

26 October 2005

GOT A STRAW? Australian-owned Barokes 'wine in a can' is set to take the Kiwi ready to drink beverage market by storm.

The 'can generation' is back in fashion now that, as well as the traditional six pack of lager or a few ready-mixed bourbon and cokes, wine can be bought in the form of the classic Kiwi stubbie.

Wine-in-a-can is one of the latest products to hit the New Zealand ready to drink (RTD) market with varieties such as Cabernet Shiraz Merlot, Chardonnay Semillion and red and white sparkling wine all coming in a convenient 250ml can.

Australian company Barokes Wines came up with the idea which it says was developed to "deliver premium quality wine with stability and longevity to the can generation (18-39 year olds) who are adopting the product for its distinctive convenience and safety benefits as well as premium quality".

The company has been granted a New Zealand patent for its technology - labelled Vinsafe, and is now conducting negotiations with several major wineries who wish to licence the innovation.

Barokes CEO Greg Stokes said breaking into the New Zealand market was an important milestone for the company and would revolutionise the way Kiwis consume wine.

"We are excited to be launching wine in a can into the New Zealand market and look forward to forging a new liquor category - the ready to drink wine (RTDW) segment in this market.

"We believe that this is a unique product which is well suited to the New Zealand lifestyle."

The Barokes brand of wine in a can will retail in New Zealand for around $5.99 a can and is likely to be sold in four packs.
